The new REMIT ‘Platform for Remittances, Investments and Migrants’ Entrepreneurship’ (PRIME) Central Asia programme aims to maximize the developmental impact of remittances by increasing access to remittances through digital methods, promoting digital and financial inclusion, and enhancing migrant returnees’ access to income-generating activities, particularly in rural areas.

The kick-off meeting discussed:

  • IFAD’s current strategy in the country,
  • Introduced the new PRIME programme,
  • Current trends in the national remittances market, focusing on the challenges and opportunities,
  • Build strong partnerships for effective programme implementation.

Новая программа “Платформа для денежных переводов, инвестиций и предпринимательства мигрантов” (PRIME) в Центральной Азии направлена на максимальное увеличение воздействия денежных переводов на развитие путем расширения доступа к денежным переводам с помощью цифровых методов, продвижения цифровой и финансовой интеграции, а также расширения доступа возвращающихся мигрантов к деятельности, приносящей доход, особенно в сельских районах.

На встрече обсуждались следующие будет вопросы:

  • Текущая стратегия ИФАД в стране,
  • Представление новой программы PRIME,
  • текущих тенденций на национальном рынке денежных переводов с акцентом на проблемы и возможности,
  • установление прочных партнерских отношений для эффективной реализации программы.

During the Ghana  Community of Practice (CoP) meeting scheduled for March 28th, 2024 at the Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, Accra, the following topics have been covered:

  • Identifying major consumer protection issues in Ghana’s remittances market.
  • Examining safeguards against fraud and scams targeting remittance receivers.
  • Exploring customer support channels and complaint resolution processes for handling disputes.
  • Discussing potential improvements to consumer protection regulations

To discuss the provisional findings of the guidelines “Maximizing the economic contribution of remittances and diaspora to sustainable development” and create a specific space for exploring experiences of attractive diaspora financial resources for sustainable development, the IOM, IFAD and UNDP together with the Governments of Mexico and the Global Research Forum on Diaspora and Transnationalism (GRFDT) are organizing a GFMD side event aiming to enrich the dialogue on this thematic area by organizing a focused discussion on “Diaspora Economic Potential for Sustainable Development: Proven Strategies, Best Practices and Results”.

The ‘Leveraging Remittances and Diaspora Investment for Climate Resilient Development Impact’ consultation in the context of the Sustainability, Stability and Security (3S) Initiative in Africa took place in 17-18 January 2024 at IFAD headquarters in Rome, Italy.

IFAD and UNCCD partnered to contribute to the Sustainability, Stability and Security (3S) Initiative in Africa. This partnership enables rural remittance families and their communities to build climate resilience and improve sustainable land management, thereby enhancing livelihoods, food and water security, rural youth employment, and reducing the incentives for migration due to climate change.

The event lasted for two days. Day 1 consisted of a sequence of technical panels, relevant studies, and surveys, followed by the presentation of the 3S Initiative approach and open consultation. Speakers are global experts and practitioners from both public and private sectors,  shared their insights, experiences and lessons learned. Day 2 was entirely dedicated to the consultation with the Member States.

Cash sent home by Kenyans working in African countries became the fastest-growing source of the nation’s diaspora dollar inflows last year at a time when overall remittances grew by the slowest pace in four years, largely hurt by elevated inflationary pressures on earnings in the US and Britain.

Cash wired home by Kenyans in other countries on the continent climbed by nearly half to $305.21 million (about Sh48.83 billion under prevailing conversion rates) in 2023 compared with the year before, official data shows, helping boost dollar flows whose supply has been problematic.

The government is on record stating that it aims to raise the volume of diaspora remittances to Ksh1 trillion by 2027. Diaspora remittances are important for building an economy since they are useful in promoting household income, stimulating and enhancing investment and catalysing growth.
